CLAY ANALYSIS by XRD
Analysis of the “clay-size” (<2
micron) fraction of geologic samples is also available. The bulk sample
is analyzed as described on the previous page. The clay-size fraction
is concentrated by a column settling procedure based on Stokes’
Law. Oriented mounts of this fraction are analyzed, glycolated and then
re-analyzed. Mounted samples may be heat-treated and analyzed to aid in
the identification of clay minerals.
The analytical report includes a description of the
analytical procedure and semi-quantitative
estimates of the concentrations of all crystalline
phases indentified. The weight percent material concentrated by the
settling procedure is also included in the report.
Raw x-ray diffraction data can be provided in
digital form on disk or as a graph on letter-size paper. All reports
are mailed. Reports can be emailed at no extra charge.
